Dishonored’s new standalone adventure promises to offer us an unforgettable story and original gameplay mechanics
The Dishonored series doesn’t need any presentation: the passion for stealth titles fed by the authors of Arkane Studios and Bethesda has turned this adventure into a media phenomenon capable of attracting millions of enthusiasts, a jewel of depth and at the same time immediacy who has been able to overcome the constraints of a genre not particularly fortunate.
In recent days, thanks to the release of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, we returned with immense pleasure (and a bit of fear) in the Karnaca slums to experience incredible adventures between killers, fanatics and shadow creatures. The time spent between the four digital walls of this standalone expansion, useless to hide it, has given us the image of a solid project, capable of giving a fair amount of hours of pure fun.
Without further delay, we invite you to read our review of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider to find out what we think about this intriguing stealth action game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The Death of the Outsider story is indirectly linked to the Dishonored 2 plot, following a few months of concluding events of the last chapter of the stealth saga of Arkane Studios and Bethesda. The undisputed star of the adventure is assassin Billie Lurk, the favorite of the legendary Daud: every action we accomplish by interpreting this formidable human hunter will be bound to the ultimate goal of killing the Exterior.
As you can easily guess, it will not be easy to reach the supernatural entity that dominates the fate of the inhabitants of The Isles: in order to succeed in the desperate mission we will have to go down into the hell of Karnaca and face legions of fanatics, men and women with corrupted minds who will be willing to do everything to ensure the survival of their god.
Returning to Karnaca, after Dishonored 2, will be the perfect excuse to confront us with some minor characters and discover the lost secrets of the city: along the way we will be able to get ancient artifacts, mysterious objects with arcane power and useful information to knot again the unsolved wires of history of the previous chapters of the series.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider introduces several gameplay innovations that help to awaken experience in surprising ways. Although not possessing the Outsider’s Mark, in fact, the elusive assassin Billie succeeds in asserting both during combat and stealth sessions through the use of a completely new set of skills and gadgets.
Billie’s Bill of Fame includes Displace (an evolution of Far Reach’s ability to let the new protagonist teletrasport at different points in the map), Void Strike (a telecine-based attack), Semblance (a nice power that allows us to “steal” the appearance of the enemy) and Foresight (a vision that blocks time for a short time and gives us the opportunity to explore the scenario). To this you need to add the Voltaic Gun integrated into Billie’s wrist, the hyperbaric grenades, the talisman Rat Whispers and the mines that can be hooked to kill or subdue the enemies both in lethal and non-lethal way.
The absence of Corvo’s and Emily’s power tree does not, however, result in total abandonment of its powers: once the main campaign is over, it is possible to embed the story in the Original Game Plus mode and use some of the “classic” of the previous heroes of the Dishonored series. Thanks to this simple stratagem, and in the presence of the new Contracts system, the overall longevity of the title manages to easily overcome the 15 hours of play despite the linearity of the five missions that make up the story.
Graphics and Sound
From the exquisite graphic and artistic point of view, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider keeps on the highest quality standards of Dishonored 2. The Gothic architecture of Karnaca, the decadent decor of the dwellings and the steampunk shape of weapons and gadgets give the title a unique style that resembles beautifully in the particle effects associated with the use of powers and weapons by Billie and his enemies, human and non-human.
The use of the same Dishonored 2 graphics engine also allows the Arkane Studios team to take advantage of the profound optimization work carried out in the post-launch weeks of the previous chapter: no more bugs, glitches and instability problems, so.
The care taken by Bethesda’s authors in the creation of the graphics is found in the audio segment, with a wonderful soundtrack, a wide variety of ambient sounds and dialogs optimally dubbed by actors such as Rosario Dawson and Michael Madsen.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider marks the end of a cycle, both for the authors of Arkane Studios and for fans of the series. Embracing all of the narrative elements and gameplay that made this saga so popular and appreciated by stealth titles, in fact, Billie Lurk’s adventure crystallizes Corvo, Emily and Daud’s experience in a temporal chest that can no longer be open.
The smoothness of gameplay mechanics linked to stealth sessions, extraordinary level design, a concise story, original character skills and the ability to extend title longevity with Contracts and the “Original Game Plus” mode makes Dishonored: Death of the Outsider an indispensable purchase for those who have always followed this series but also for those who, intrigued by the dark atmospheres and the freedom offered by the open-world, decide to immerse themselves only now in this mysterious dimension.
