Nidhogg 2 review – All Around the Wurm

Nidhogg 2 is a masterpiece of simplicity with an uncompromising combat system, an unforgettable multiplayer gameplay and graphics so awkwardly ugly to look gorgeous.

The development of Nidhogg 2 has been particularly long. The great success of the first Nidhogg, released in 2014 by Flywrench, has prompted Messhof developers to carefully consider every aspect of the original indie masterpiece in the hope of giving fans a fun gaming system.

Taking into account the work of the Flywrench, the authors of Messhof have tried to evolve the gameplay mechanics of the first Nidhogg by adding new weapons, more variety in the settings and, above all, a completely new graphics, with a much grotesque and original design.

With the review of Nidhogg 2 that we will propose you today, we will offer our “precious” point of view on the last effort of the Messhof Games team, hoping to help you discover the strengths and weaknesses of this interesting indie opera released this August, 15 on PC (Steam) and PlayStation 4.

Nidhogg 2′s unique combat system forces the player to become a curious warrior halfway between a ninja and a rugby athlete. Unlike other 2D action, in fact, in the universe of Nidhogg 2, victory not only passes by the slaughter of enemies but follows a singular ritual that involves the frenzied run to the right (or left) of the map in the direction of the final level With the hungry Wurm.

Overcoming obstacles requires some precision and perfect timing: every time a warrior is killed by his opponent, he goes back to the field with a different weapon, and this is undoubtedly the most important innovation of Nidhogg 2 over the past chapter .

The presence of medieval swords, stumps, bows and daggers adds a new level to the overall gameplay experience. The most interesting result of this innovation is the ease with which you can get familiar with the combat system.

The battles of Nidhogg 2 give a lot of emotions both in singleplayer and multiplayer, thanks to a truly simple gaming approach that leaves no room for doubt but which, however, allows more experienced users to use complex strategies and techniques to achieve victory and End up in the mouth at Wurm.

Nidhogg 2′s narrative plot is as simple as that of the first chapter of the series: our job is to take control of a heroic warrior who decides to sacrifice his life to Wurm, the snake of Nordica mythology that must chew the roots of ‘Tree of the World to prevent the Chaos from prevailing and to keep the Valhalla creatures afloat.

The superficial experience offered by the story of Nidhogg 2 is just the cornerstone of the crazy and grotesque adventure we will be forced to undertake following the warrior’s way.

Our funny alter-ego, in fact, will not be the only hero to want to sacrifice their lives on the altar of Wurm: many other warriors will want to jump in the mouth of Nordic Snake and to do so, will run like crazy through levels full of enemies, platforms and obstacles. Only the most agile and most motivated will have the honor of satisfying the hunger of the legendary Wurm: before, however, we will have to overcome the fighters who will try, as we do, to make the big jump between the beads of the pink vermon.

Graphics and Sound

The artistic approach adopted by Messhof to design the crazy universe of Nidhogg 2 is far light years away from that of the previous chapter. If the 2014 title resembled a Commodore 64 video game, the new Nidhogg seems to be the drunken hybrid between Oddworld and Ghosts’ n Goblins.

The troubled warriors of Nidhogg 2 and the visionary setting in which they will fight are designed by Toby Dixon, a genius of pixel-art that is able to give his digital works an absolutely unique style. Such a brave move, though, has a price: for many viewers, Dixon’s artistic style is really overwhelming and covers every aspect of gameplay in a negative way.

Even the fiercest detractors of Toby’s work will admit that Nidhogg 2′s combat animations are really amazing and that the worlds where arcade tournaments and battles are played are a hymn to originality.

The authors of Messhof recall the title spirit of 2014 and give it a new dress that surprises and exalts the spectator. Toby Dixon’s artistic style has the effect of a slap in the face, an example of courage and enthusiasm for all independent video game developers.

If you love local multiplayer video games, Nidhogg 2 is the title for you.
